Wanderers – Digitally grown 3d printed wearables that could embed living matter

Wanderers is a collaborative project between Neri Oxman (and the team at the Mediated Matter Group at MIT Media Lab), Christoph Bader & Dominik Kolb (Deskriptiv) to create four digitally grown and 3d printed wearables that could embed living matter. The teams are working on a computational growth process which is capable of producing a wide variety of growing structures. Inspired by natural growth behaviour, the computational process creates shapes that adapt to their environment. Starting with a seed, the process simulates growth by continuously expanding and refining its shape. The wearables are designed to interact with a specific environment characteristic of their destination and generate sufficient quantities of biomass, water, air and light necessary for sustaining life: some photosynthesize converting daylight into energy, others bio-mineralize to strengthen and augment human bone, and some fluoresce to light the way in pitch darkness.

I talked a lot about what I wanted over the past few weeks and started to search the web. I found a really good “thing” that could be the ground to build on.

What really fascinated me was how natural things grow and are build. Is it predictable? Can we influence it to create new shapes? I know we can but can I do this?

I didn’t know where to start but I found the term “morphology” what seems to question and research the same fields as where I want to be in.

“Morphology is a branch of biology dealing with the study of the form and structure of organisms and their specific structural features. This includes aspects of the outward appearance (shape, structure, colour, pattern,size), i.e., external morphology (eidonomy) as well as the form and structure of the internal parts like bones and organs, i.e., internal morphology or anatomy

I’m going to search for the book “metamorphosis of plants” from Goethe and see where it takes me.

The Beginning

  • The master is an opportunity to experiment and research in the borders between art and science.

    At the bachelor sometimes I had troubles with making “finished” products that they wanted to see at the end of the block. I like to wander around in my research and leave paths open to research later and work in concepts.

    At first I tought it was bad that they didn’t let me experiment for a while and wanted me to finish projects all the time and make concrete steps. now I see it was really good for me to finish things so I don’t get lost in my unendingly thinking.

    During the bachelor I placed myself in the tradition of kinetic sculptors but I’ll let that go for now and see where the process leads me.
